		<description>Jennifer Dalton
	Jennifer Dalton is an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. In her installations, drawings and sculptures she collects, organizes and evaluates cultural information according to her own personal criteria. Her subjects are often chosen in an attempt to test a hypothesis or to dissect a chip on her own shoulder, and the results of her research have been displayed as photographic grids, hand-drawn charts, customized gumball machines, candies, bracelets, figurines, and other materials.

Dalton holds a BA in Fine Art from UCLA and an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Her work has recently been exhibited at Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany; the Wellin Museum of Art, Hamilton, NY; Museum of Capitalism, New York, Boston and Oakland; Flag Art Foundation, New York; Center Galleries, Detroit; Museum Brandhorst, Munich, Germany; Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles; and Isolyatsia Foundation, Donetsk, Ukraine.

Her artwork has been discussed in the publications New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Artforum, Flash Art, Frieze, Hyperallergic, and others, and in the books 33 Artists in 3 Acts, by Sarah Thornton; Ecological Aesthetics: Artful Tactics for Humans, Nature and Politics by Nathaniel Stern; Living and Sustaining a Creative Life: Essays by 40 Working Artists, edited by Sharon Louden; Various Small Books, edited by Jeff Brouws, Wendy Burton-Brouws, and Hermann Zscheigner; and Art on the Block: Tracking the New York Art World from Soho to the Bowery, Bushwick and Beyond” by Anne Fensterstock.

	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Ghost of a Dream
	

	Ghost of a Dream is the collaborative project of Lauren Was and Adam Eckstrom who began working together in 2007 shortly after getting married. This collaboration is their full time practice in which they produce work about people’s hopes and dreams out of the ephemera created trying to attain those aspirations. They have had the honor to receive support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, Joan Mitchell Foundation, Artist Resource Trust, Jerome Foundation and received the first annual Young Masters Art Prize in London. They have received artist residencies in Berlin, Basel, Beijing, France, and venues throughout the US including Bemis Center, ISCP, Smack Mellon, Wassaic Project, the Joan Mitchell Foundation AIR in New Orleans, Elsewhere Museum, and will attend the Rauschenberg Foundation AIR in 2023. They are also currently the Embedded Critics at the Wassaic Project in New York. Ghost of a Dream’s current solo exhibitions are “Tomorrow is Here” at the new MAAM museum in Boston, and “Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution)” at the Ackland Art &#38;nbsp;Museum in Chapel Hill. Susan Hamburger was born in Boston, Massachusetts and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
She holds a BA in Fine Art from Brandeis University, an MFA in Visual Art from Mason Gross School of
the Arts, Rutgers University and an MA in Art Education from The City College of New York, CUNY.
She has received of a number of awards, including fellowships from Dieu Donné Papermill,The
Wassaic Project Print Studio, Abbey Mural Workshop and Aljira; residencies at Ucross Foundation,
Jentel Foundation, Saltonstall Foundation and Millay Colony; and New York studio residencies at
PS122, Abrons Art Center and Chashama. She has had solo exhibitions and projects at The Wild Bird
Fund, The Wassaic Project, Roger Smith Hotel, Auxiliary Projects, Schroeder Romero &#38;amp; Shredder,
The Gallery at 1GAP, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Tomasulo Gallery at Union County College,
and Cheryl McGinnis Gallery. Group exhibition venues have included Urban Glass, Mixed Greens,
Pierogi Gallery, 601Artspace, Pelham Art Center and No Longer Empty. Her work has been featured
in American Craft Magazine and Cultural Politics (Duke University Press) and has been reviewed and/
or reproduced in numerous publications, among them, The New York Times, The Village Voice, The
Cleveland Plain Dealer, Better Homes &#38;amp; Gardens, Apartment Therapy, The James Kalm Report,
ArtFCity.com and hyperallergic.com. From 1996-2002 she was the contributing art editor for the
neighborhood publication, Waterfront Week, covering Williamsburg’s nascent art scene.

		<description>Jessica Hargreaves
	Jessica Hargreaves was born and raised in London, England. She studied fashion at Central St Martins, and after working in fashion and illustration in New York City, she received an MFA from School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2006. Recent curatorial projects include 49.5, a 12 artist installation at 601 Artspace, and with Front Room Gallery Hargreaves has just opened Mother-In-Law's a&#38;nbsp; stand alone project space in Germantown NY. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Figureworks Gallery, Brooklyn (2016) and selected group exhibitions include Auxiliary Projects,&#38;nbsp; Front Room Gallery and OK Harris. Two of her posters for The Women’s March (2017) were acquired by the Museum of The City of New York.

David Howe’s work probes the elemental contradiction between our needs for freedom and stability, exploring humankind’s neverending oscillation between open and closed systems.. Informed by his training as a photographer and his background in film, Howe’s practice is research-based, multifaceted and conceptual. His medium is defined by the project, and includes lens-based work, painting, sculpture, installation and video. &#38;nbsp;


Educated at Harvard and the International Center for Photography,
Howe has also curated numerous exhibitions and directed films on
contemporary artists for Art21. Recently, Howe
published his first artist's book, Trace Elements.&#38;nbsp;

	Born in post-industrial Schenectady, New York in 1969, artist David Opdyke makes artwork that explores globalization, consumerism, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment. His work is held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and The Washington Convention Center in DC. Exhibitions include The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Marianne Boesky Gallery, MoMA P.S.1, the 12th Havana Biennial, and venues in Chicago, Zagreb, the Netherlands, and Milan. Awards include NYFA Fellowships, a NYC Percent for Art commission, and residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell.&#38;nbsp; Press coverage includes Art in America, The Nation, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Hyperallergic, and Vanity Fair. David Opdyke lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens.

Shaoul+Howe is pleased to present Support and Defend, an exhibition of recent works by gallery partner and founder David Howe.&#38;nbsp; The decision to exhibit Howe’s work, while unusual and potentially controversial, remains within the gallery’s founding mission: to support unusual practices in contemporary art.
 Reflective of the unique situation, artist William Powhida was invited to offer an outside perspective as a special curator of the exhibition.&#38;nbsp; Support and Defend is the culmination of months of studio visits and hours of discussion between the gallery, the artist, and the curator regarding how best to present&#38;nbsp; Howe’s political and conceptually-driven work as well as the inherent political dynamics of the situation. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
 The title of the exhibition, borrowed from a Tom Clancy CIA-espionage thriller, offers multiple allusions to the works included in Howe’s debut solo show. At the center of the exhibition, the immersive installation, “Merry Christmas! Love, Kim Jong Un,” explores the inner contradictions of life under a personality cult with wry humor.&#38;nbsp; Howe’s fascination with images and facades of power extends into American society, ironically through the lens of the little known North Korean practice of “Collaborative Painting”, through two murals of Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.&#38;nbsp; Howe’s “Concrete Cathedral” represents another facet of authoritarianism and finds inspiration in the extraordinary steps the People’s Republic of Albania took to transform religious architecture into secular sites of collective activity during communist rule.&#38;nbsp;
 Intrigued by the parallels between North Korean collaborative painting and contemporary art practices employing anonymous assistants, Powhida commissioned a third painting to be completed on site at the gallery over the course of the six-week exhibition.&#38;nbsp; Writing on the tradition of collaborative painting, artist and Georgetown Univeristy art professor BG Muhn observes, “collaborative work is generally considered unappealing within a capitalist society, where individuals working in tandem on the same piece of art may complicate creative direction and limit personal merit; in turn, artists might find their unique creative spirit undercut.”&#38;nbsp; This potential conflict resolves itself in both systems when “the artists strictly follow the principle of foregoing attachment to an individual vision in order to serve the whole.”
 The paradox of the North Korean ideology of Juche – self-reliance and the mastery of one’s own fate – in a communist state serves as an analogy for the ways subordinated classes of a society are expected to assume the attitudes of their ruling class.&#38;nbsp; In North Korea, the position of the ‘master’ is defined as “an independent position and a creative position,” which finds numerous parallels in the position of the artist in Western societies.&#38;nbsp; That Howe occupies both class positions is only one of the dualities that informs his darkly comic examinations of the uses of propaganda in Support and Defend.
